elvis was a pop culture icon which was partially because he was white. you're thinking to much though, he wasn't put in a position where he could succeed because he was white, just because he was profitable. part of that was whiteness, but in the same time you have guys like little richard, rufus thomas, booker t and the mgs and carla thomas coming up.
elivs was also from tennessee area, where recording studios would churn out the same southern twangy-rock stuff for radio... hell, his label (sun) got there first hit from a black man.
there's some validity to what you're saying, sure, but its overblown as hell. you're thinking a little too much about race, when its really just been about the money
