Default Black August - Two Sides to Every Story (sign in thread)

So I decided to take over the tournament...

Relax, I won't be participating... I'll be solely focused on making this run like I've always thought a tournament/league should be run around here. Thanks to @Sharp for the mod privileges.

Sorry @Master Rock & @Cereal, but I smelt the shit show coming from miles down the road and had to step in... It's time for a better class of topical tournament, ladies and gents...

I'm looking for 16 sign ups, no more, no less. Top 16 will be chosen... and that doesn't mean first-come-first-serve. I'll be taking the TOP topical heads from the pool which I'm provided... If I don't know you or your track record, or you have a tendency to no-show, you better hope we are in need of people or you will probably be passed by. If you sign in on the first day and someone I have determined to be better signs in seconds before the deadline, they get the spot. As Tupac famously put it... That's just the way it is. That said, if you don't sign in by the deadline, I can't help you. I don't care who you are at that point.

Oh and hey @Sinacog... What's up, bro? You good? Awesome. Fuck off.

The Topics - There's two sides to every story... So this time around, each battle will be given TWO topics. (They will be picture topics, don't worry) You MUST specify which topic you are writing for upon check in. Once you've chosen your topic, it cannot be changed later. Check-ins are due 24 hrs after the thread is made, so take a little time to think about it... (But not too much. No check in = DQ) I think that having two topics will help eliminate the 'lucky connection' angle that some get when receiving a topic and will ensure the more talented/creative writer will prevail. At least, that's the logic behind it.

Voting - Voting will be determined by a 5 judge panel for the initial round. Each battle will be assigned 5 judges at random from the pool; all five MUST vote on the battle(s) they have been selected to judge or will be DQ'd in their own battle. Voting will be based on who has the stronger connection to their selected topic, taking into account story, technical ability, etc. If a vote isn't up to par by MY STANDARDS, meaning if it's clear you didn't actually read the verses and just dropped some fortune cookie statements and voted, I will call you out on it and make you edit your vote. You will have 12 hours to edit your vote to my satisfaction or you will be DQ'd in your battle. If a no-show for voting occurs, I will step in and fill the void. If two no-shows occur, my vote will count as two, etc.

If anyone outside the selected judge panel drops a vote, it will be discounted from your own vote total. So pay attention to who the judges actually are and don't do it.

Once the tournament progresses into the second round, it will become a 3 judge panel. The semi finals and finals will be voted on by myself and two other reliable judges who I can drudge up at the time. They will be announced in advance.

Deadlines Matter - There will be NO EXTENSIONS. Hear that? None. (Lars is masterbating right now...) You WILL make your deadline or you WILL lose. No excuses. I'm tired of these automatic 24-hour extensions that render deadlines pointless... Won't happen on my watch. Make your deadline, or you will be DQ'd. Real life issues? Go whine to your baby mama. Don't care. You'll have roughly 4-5 days... That's more than enough time. We're here to write.... so WRITE.

Seeding - I'll be seeding all entrants based on past successes/failures. I've seen enough around here to know who should be where. #1 will face #16, #2 will face #15.... and so on and so forth. You know how it works.

Line Limit - Max. 60 lines Min. 20 lines. You want to go more/less? That can be agreed upon IN THE THREAD at check in. No PM's or shady side deals. If I don't see it, it didn't happen. If you go over, you get DQ'd. If you are under, you get DQ'd. Learn to count.

No Byes - So, as it tends to happen, it's highly probable that one or two people will fuck up to the point where someone will have no one to face in the following round, right? Nope. If there is no opponent, I will be reaching out to a select few who maybe didn't initially join to fill in, hopefully luring them in with the fact that they've already advanced to where they would be needed, thus upping their chances to win it all. If I can't get anyone, I will step in myself and have someone reliable choose the topic.

Not much I can do about no-shows, but I can promise someone won't go an entire round without an opponent.

As you've probably guessed by now, I'll most likely be handing out DQ's like pamphlets at your local mall but I expect rules to be followed and will enforce them accordingly. I won't be swayed or manipulated like others before me. I have ZERO issue with DQ'ing everybody and crowning myself champion. Follow. The. Fucking. Rules.

But above all... Have fun :).

Mags will be posted on a weekly basis. Profiles/Previews & Reviews/Interviews, whatever I can manage. May not be too flashy, but I'll have something up to reward those who took the time to write. Also, I'll be awarding the 'Two Sides to Every Story' accomplishment for round one when we have the max amount of entrants participating - This will be the topical piece I deem to be the creme of the crop for round one ONLY. If you win, you get the Accomp. Hopefully this will inspire you guys to come out of the gates strong and to not coast based on a potential favorable seeding/opponent.

Sign ins end July 31st at 11:59pm EST.

Tournament forum will be created tonight with seedings, discussions thread, mag on August 1st.

Battles will be up Monday, August 2nd and due Friday, August 6th at 11:59pm EST. (That's not a coma-line, that's a deadline. It's final)

Voting will take place over the weekend, with battles closing Sunday, August 8th at 11:59pm EST. (Remember, if you don't vote you will be eliminated; It's not optional)

I'm hoping to keep to this schedule for the entirety of the tournament. If this, and all of the above doesn't seem like something you can keep pace with, then please don't sign in and take a spot from someone who wants to do it...

And that's that.
