to be honest, if I was really going to approach the debate of nicest pen in rap in an autistic way, I think it would require coming up with a definition and mathematically weighting certain abilities.
There’s a lot of aspects to writing. Multis, wordplay, rhymeschemes. Do we consider flow as part of writing ability? I think it should be, since rhythm constrains your lyricism. How much does vulnerability or chorus writing matter versus braggadocio wit?
How about freestyling? Obviously it’s irrelevant if we’re using the term “nicest pen” but if we’re asking about the nicest lyricist, some people might argue that freestyling ability matters.
The thing is destro is trying to argue that it’s subjective, but its only subjective because there are no clear definitions. For example, “what is a planet?” If there’s no clear definition for what a planet is, any rock in the solar system can be called a planet. There are bodies larger than Pluto that we’ve discovered after Pluto but aren’t classified as planet. That’s why definitions needed to be established and why Pluto was declassified as a planet after those definitions were created
And if you establish those definitions the same way the a scientist would establish a definition for anything that’s undefined, then you can proceed to have these discussions in a way where all of these things are quantifiable and an objective agreement can be reached
This seems like a fun thing to do, I might create a web program and get back to you
But the tl;dr version is if we’re talking about multis/rhymeschemes/flow, which is usually what people tend to focus on in these discussions, Royce is by far the best.
