I know the nurse said not to stray, to stay near his bed
but fear crept in while he slept so he walks to clear his head
as these flashes of the past bleed into the present
his beleagured brain strains to try & keep assemblin'
some meager semblance of his current identity
but shadows of himself keep eclipsing who he's meant to be
finds his little hands wrapped around a chainlink fence
wide-eyed watchin' a ballgame, young nose pressed against
his childhood reflections remain in his glazed eyes
dementia sets in, the pupil returns as his stay wide
straightjacket of the mind latched & trapped him in
can't face the disease, afraid he sees it lookin' back at him
& the saddest part of all is all that's eventually left
is the pain of this disease he can't remember to forget
