I prefer to pick things I'd enjoy writing too, something odd looking and thought-provoking and kind of "open" that doesn't determine the way the verse has to go.
I think that leaves the way for a good eclectic mix of verses to the topics.
I'm not generally a fan of assigned topics, in truth, I kind of like to find something I enjoy and write to that rather than force myself to write to something I'm not overly keen on.
I'll assign you guys a topic each this week, though, to see how you do.
I think I'm a good topic selector tbh.
