Yea you probably need the actual ebook. I remember getting kindle for desktop and downloading my books to it, i think i was trying to download books i didnt have tho and open them with kindle? I forget. I remember it being a nightmare. I can look into it when i get home

But if its something you rented im sure they got copy protections in place, cuz you could just copy it to pdf and own it
