I was thinkin that yeah

but instead of one mentor over a bunch of people and not caring/having the time for that many people maybe just pick the 4 people with the most potential and have them cycle through a roster of 4 vets, 4 weeks of battles then the two with the best records/performances face off in a finals match without help
