when i say history book in this context im more referring to the likes of livy/herodotus/josephus/memnon/polybius etc etc. ancient historians of the era
the old testament is full of nonsense but there is some shit in there worth reading just because ancient israel is the most documented in there but it was a huge world
the problem is people look at that time in history through a distorted lens because of religion. they think of the world in tiny terms, like only egypt was popping and minor kingdoms like babylon and shit
but there was so much happening, espescially up to the sea peoples and the first dark age after 1177 bc. when jesus came about shit was heavily popping again, julius caesar was already dead and rome was almost 800 years into existence.
living a good life with good moral principles doesn't require religion. its common sense. a chimp thats a maniac will always be killed by the others. find your position in the social order and stop lying to yourself. the rules in the bible weren't created because people constantly broke them, they were written down because it was common knowledge. don't fuck your neighbors wife. why? because when you do he's pissed about it and kills you both. good rule to live by. etc
