Rogue One is a stand alone film. The entire purpose of that film was to bridge the gap between episodes 4,5, and 6 (the original movies from the 70s and 80s) to the ones they're making now (force awakens, last Jedi).

The ones from the 00s directed by Lucas are the original trilogy that set up the other 6 movies. For some reason when dude was adapting these books to the big screen dude decided to start in the middle.
