He'd have defensive problems at a high level though. Stockton grabbed a lot of steals because he had quick hands but he was by no means a ball stopper, especially in a league like this where the Pg most teams will have will likely be someone like Magic or Isiah Thomas or Steve Nash. He couldn't guard any of them.
Stockton WAS NEVER ESPECIALLY FAST. He was FUNDAMENTALLY GREAT. Very good shooter, high basketball IQ, basketball savvy. Gary Payton specifically had trouble guarding him because he had to fight through pick after pick after pick Stockton would call for. He WOULD NEVER EVER be allowed to dominate the ball like that on the same floor as Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, the Utah Jazz was Stockton dribbling around, penetrating and dishing, running the pick and roll with Malone, taking jumpers. That is not going down on the same floor with Michael Jordan.. etc. So if he isn't going to bring that offensively, you're better off finding a more athletic guard who can give you more on the defensive end of the floor.
