The idea was to open no-shows up to promote competition while keeping the league as close to its original schedule as possible.

The opportunity is meant to be fair for those already enrolled in the league, not for those not in it yet.

Making the deadline relative to when people "claim" the matchup would be advantageous for any competitor coming in, because they could survey the verse and write against it at their leisure. And it would set the schedule back.

People generally write against the deadline for topical battles, so a fixed deadline & open competition means 'write your best as quickly as possible because if you want it your record is on the line', so this seems to be the fairest method to me.
