Destroyer is right, it can be longer than 17 syllables although it rarely happens. I don't think the vote should count either.
It seems like it's more important that the Haiku is atmospheric and in style that makes it different to other forms of poetry. It's just that the 5,7,5 thing is the most common adaptation of Japanese Haiku. Today I learned. ^^

Gina should read this as well (imo) and maybe reconsider deleting her vote and start over unless she can counter these sources.
