Maybe there was a vulnerability in one or both systems that was about to be / was exploited
...a 0-day threat in United's system, and NYSE found suspiciously high volume on put options on UAL so they shut down & coordinated with Homeland Security + SEC
...maybe NYSE saw pre-market dumps on Greece or China & had reason to bottleneck it, and United was a diversion
...maybe it was a cyber or terrorist attack thwarted by the all-seeing eyes of our intelligence communities
All just theories of course, anything's possible
But I think those have more of a basis than another
