It's because some parents care more about how society (and quite often their religion) sees them than the emotions of their children. Did you see the story about a transgender teen killing herself because of being judged and not accepted by her parents for feeling like she was a female in a males body? Even once she was dead her parents refused to refer to her as 'she'.
Religion does good things, it also makes people hurt those closest to them to gain the favour of an invisible man in the sky.
