Multiple things..
For instance a mixtape could be comprised of beats that you dont own or weren't intended for your use.
Such a thing could never be considered a true album.
Mixtapes often feature DJ guest appearances..never on albums to my knowledge.
These are just technicalities but albums also more often than not have a strategic approach(overall theme or premise, etc)
Whereas a mix tape can be much more up in the air, completely random even.
