Since alcohol stimulates, amongst other things, the receptors that are geared towards anti-anxiety neurotransmitters it causes, after somewhat long-term use where you drink to the point of intoxication at least semi-regularly, an anxiety-reduction deficiency because it is an 'outer' agent - your brain reconfigures to get used to this supplied liquid courage. Withdrawal from any given drug basically amounts to the opposite of their positive effects (if you're a opiate junkie for example and used to artificial pain reduction, you will become abnormally sensitive during withdrawal).

Psychologically paranoia is anxiety's louder cousin - whereas anxiety is simply fear without any concrete foundation, paranoia is fear that sticks to anything.
