I dunno if this is true or happening in the USA because I've never been, but if it is happening I'd imagine it's due to employment issues...large businesses operate in large cities, they can offer better wages and often times this has a negative effect on small businesses in small towns to the point they are no longer able to compete/offer employment, which gives people no option other than to leave those towns and move to large cities.
It's not really a new thing, been happening for a while in most first world countries.
