With someone I don't know, sure, they could see it as a sign of disrespect.
But I say it around my black friends and use it in conversation and its natural, I don't get the sense of "oops" when we speak.
Usually though, once a black person gets tight with the white friend he becomes one of them and that pass is granted to use the word.
I think this whole argument is based off peoples opinion of the word and its similarity to the derogatory term.
Idk though, not trying to step on any toes
