is that all you need to begin making beats regularly?
An MPC works very well. As an alternative, a computer with Ableton Luve and a MIDI controller works.. you can get a cheap MIDI controller with touch pads... I think the newer MPC's have very good touch pad sensitivity, which is crucial. Also, when dealing with computers & software hooked up to hardware... there can be latency issues. Electronic drum sets are ideal, for this situation. I use a computer with an APC40 when I feel like making beats, but the APC40 + Ableton is more of a loop dropping situation... You can't punch in the drum hits yourself. Thats what the MIDI controller is for, and it could be either touch pad or keyboard set. I haven't gotten into making beats via MIDI yet (all though I bought the cord). For now, all I've been doing is using downloaded break beats, adding effects, making multiple channels, and dropping the final audio down with the APC40. You can download Ableton Live free via torrent, and you don't need an APC40 or MIDI controller to make beats... you can use your keyboard. It just takes a bit of educating yourself via tutorials on youtube and whatnot.

@uh-oh ----- do you have a soundcloud?
