The World Trade Center was an engineering marvel and was absolutely designed like all skyscrapers, to collapse on top of itself. This was a topic in my civil engineering college course. The majority of the building was air. Brilliant design.

The essentially hit them in perfect spots. The fuel rich flame was enough to weaken the tensile strength of the steel by 50-60% this the weight above was enough to start the chain reaction of each floor collapsing upon itself. That is a design safety mechanism.
