You're underestimating powerful people's egos in an era where the proletariat still had some semblance of power to change things. They invented this mystique to keep themselves from being challenged. The best part of all of that is it came tumbling down anyway thanks to Teddy Roosevelt. Yet here you all are, clinging to late 19th/early 20th century corpses as if they are relevant in today's world.
Truly rich/old money people today don't need cloak and dagger. They have no threat from those beneath them. There is no need to be opaque about it. You're all grasping at straws to explain why the world is unfair.
