i'm not sure about the sinkhole in NO, i havent heard of that or seen anything

but the ones in florida are because the water companies pump the water out of the underground aquifers faster than they can be replenished. so everything on top of those starts to collapse into the voided space. this is a huge problem considering floridas low elevation as is, i mean damn near half the state is uninhabitable everglades anyways surrounded by ocean, and the lands sinking to BOOT
