A topical is your exploration of a topic... I feel that you have to put forth a clear thesis or argument when doing a topical. It's an argumentative essay, in rap form. Still expect you to use metaphors, similes, and other such rhetorical devices, as well as concrete examples. Those are the best topicals. Edutainment of sorts and something that can really change your perspective. I think "New World Water" by Mos Def or "Reagan" by Killa Mike. When judging a topical verse, I look first for the thrust (what are you saying), then the style, voice, and devices (how did you say it). Slightly different criteria from judging a story, where the focus is more on plot development, characterization, dramatic tension, symbolism etc.

That being said, I would be fascinated to see an "all-topicals, all day" type of league. However, I don't think I would participate in such a league lol.
