Extras get royalty checks. My good friend's brother was an extra in one of those Tom hanks movies, and he randomly gets checks in the mail, every time the movie is shown somewhere profitable. They aren't huge checks but, hey, what's wrong with having your lunch or dinner randomly paid for here and there.
