If you instant replay events in your mind repeatedly you will manifest helplessness (and taking to violence to reclaim control will seem all the more tempting).

Say to yourself "Hm, so this is how I think/feel" knowing that an emotion is a feather in the wind as far as informing actions goes. Remind yourself that this person has his history making his actions if not excusable at least logically understandable.
