Guys, I am late to this party but I am going to throw my opinion into this...
Warrior was Warrior before Vince McMahon hired him. He had the face paint, tassles, etc for years. The hair, paint, etc all developed over the years leading up to WWF and he was going as Dingo Warrior when he got the call from WWF. They just dropped the "Dingo" and added "Ultimate" but he was the same character and had the same look.
Vince is known for trademarking his characters names so when Warrior and WWF parted ways Vince felt he owned the character, this is why Warrior changed his name legally, it was clearly a business move.
I don't think Warrior was legit crazy, I think what we witnessed was a big child. Dude had been weightlifting and wrestling since he was a very young man so I think he overcompensated alot with trying to make himself seem intellectual. His "motivational speeches" didn't seem much different than his wrestling promos, they made very little sense, he rambled and tried to string together big words.
He definitely wasn't a great technical wrestler but he was entertaining. In all of his latest interviews he openly admits that he didn't have the conditioning and he started his career while he was too noob. His best matches came from the guys who could make people look good and bring out the best in others. If you watch his matches with Randy Savage and Rick Rude, they are actually pretty damn good.
RIP.
