Has a lot to do with his persona now. Back in the 'College Dropout' days he was still an unknown quantity even to himself. Wasn't sure he could be a star. So he wasn't afraid to not be the star on his own track so long as it improved the song. Now he's implanted in the zeitgest and isn't afraid. Has its upsides and downsides. Plus he was so much more focused on proving himself through talent in his early days, via production and just amazing song structuring. He still makes great music but it's not as pure.
Then again I'm drinking, about to go play blackjack and I'm feeling poetic. People don't really change and it's a small sample size influenced by my own uninformed opinions of him as a person. But I stand by my ramblings.
