Dominate vs. Grave Diggs
Who: Dominate
How: 70-30
Why: Dominate is a known force. Quite good with wordplay.
Pretty creative. Technically sound.
But: Grave might be a good alias, because his name's not
too bad.

Sn00p: Alright, I'm here with Knucklehead aka Demo. Some of our
readers might not know you yet, so it's time to change that. Give
us your text background.

Knucklehead: Yeah most of the older heads wouldn't know me outside
of NC. I started on RapForums.com in '04 as a shortbar head. Only other
relevant txtcee to rise from the dust there was the open mic gawd Black
Disciple, so it was a pretty exclusive club of elite wordsmiths. Then started
doing longbar on all the Ock & 40 sites that went up and down every few
months, battled in the top tier with Beyond and a few others, including a
young novice Burden who is now quite the txtcee. Then went to the big
show for longbar over at ItsHipHop with Blue Bayou, Dominate, SubtleT,
NYCSPITZ, Kyza Soza etc and after that died went MIA until I was told of
NC, and now I'm here after a little over a year hiatus to bring life back to
the world of txt.

So you actually started doing short bar, but then transitioned to longbar?
Which one are you more comfortable with and why? Where did you do better?

I was 56-2 on RF so did pretty good with shortbar at the start. Longbar was
rocky for like 3-4 months it's a lot different, much more about super complex
wordplays that no one really understands unless you explain it to them in
detail. I was around 250-40 longbar lost the exact count after awhile, I
champed more in longbar than I have in shortbar but I think that's more about
the amount of time I did it. Dominated all of the Ock & 40 sites for the most
part, got an upset here and there. Even lost to Rican once haha. But now
that I've gotten the hang of shortbar I enjoy it much much more. More fun
to mess around with, can do some nice simple personal punches that hit pretty
well. Longbar was just a headache to write for mostly.

I think I have to agree with that. Good points.
Seeing how you went 56-2 and then 250-40, what do you think made people
battle so much back then? I mean you must've been motivated to write so
many verses and you must've had a lot of opponents that felt similarly. Is there
anything we can learn from that time to keep people interested (considering
the amount of noshows we had in the 1st week)?

Well for me it was mostly just something to do. I was in Middle School then
High School until 09 so I'd txt while doing my HW or after while fucking around
on the weekdays. Used to pretty much just get ripped and write verses. What
made people want to battle me was my status at the time. On RF I was the
dude to beat, then on the string of Ock & 40 sites I was top dog other than
Beyond for the most part. I think generally it was still fresh then as well, you
could still make some crazy but not to crazy wordplay that was never done
before. People voted in longbar mainly by one thing and one thing only: was it
not played and was it not to uber forced. Wording and delivery meant nothing,
so once the concepts were all tapped out it died. And similar to now, it's just all
been done. I know txt was around way before 04, but there were newer heads
rising up, a lot of active sites, etc. Now if you're top tier it is NC (now here) or
nothing. RIA and RB suck for the most part, their best heads battled at NC for
the most part. Nothing you can really do but hope new people rise up and step
their games up and maybe some old heads resurface.

So you think there's a finite number of concepts? Like some day, every line and
wordplay will have been used and text will just be impossible to do? Maybe we
should start accepting played wordplay if it has a creative twist on it, in that case.
Also, you said you were someone to beat and you had a record of 56-2 at some
point... Why do you think is there no more such domination? Even the best cats
have quite some losses on their records nowadays, especially when it comes to
leagues and such. How come?

I think mostly another issues of the amount of heads battling. On RF you had
people popping up daily, so wins were easy to acquire tbh. The top heads would
battle eachother like once or twice a month. I believe Beyond was like 200-10 or
some shit. You had a few people who just slaughtered everyone. NyVillian was
much like that on HF if I'm right. Now it's just all around solid comp. I was like
56-52 on NC I believe, granted I had 30+ no shows but some of those I would
have lost if I showed up. And I mean, kind of. It's why I stick to nameplays, they
aren't generic to everyone so until people run out of aliases we should have that
at least.

So do you think even though there are less people around that the quality of the
verses as a whole has increased? And if so, why?
And I agree with nameplays being among the fresher concepts, nowadays. Also,
personals will never run out. But do you actually think that generics can't be new
anymore? Strikta for example dropped quite some nice ones I had never seen
before in the Back2Basics Tourney.

I think when the new age comes in, if it does, it'll be safe to use a lot of concepts.
But for myself, I've seen a lot of shit and sometimes people will drop something I
saw once 4 years ago and I'll call it played when I shouldn't. The more new people
break through, the less they've all seen. Also with sites like Hollafront, NC, and IHH
being completely erased from the internet there is no reference to what truly is
played other than maybe RB. But yes, quality is much better for the most part.

Word, this really might be a turning point in the history of text. Let's see where
we end up.
Well, that's it from me. Any shoutouts to conclude this interview?

The gods @Bags @Allen Knight @God Of War and you pretty much, everyone else
is an alias turd.

If you're wondering what this is, I'll let the guy who did it explain it to you
in his own words. @Dominate, come in:
Quote:
What I'm proposing is that I'll keep track of who's signed in and out, and of everyone's records. Also, I'll do rankings based on who has the biggest score, calculated as #wins - #losses. If people have the same score then it'll go by who has the most wins, and if that still doesn't separate everyone I'll look at who got wins by no-show etc... then who gets title shots can be decided off of the ranks and whether they've already had a shot recently (like if you had a shot and lost you have to wait 3 weeks to get another shot). This way it's all really transparent and people can see what they need to do to get a champ match.
