You should have just taken the punch and then headbutted him.
One often finds the humble headbutt is most effective directly after the opponent has landed a blow, do it immediately, do not stop to think about the fact you have just been punched, as soon as you feel it your head should instantly be moving forward, nobody expects it....this has served me well inside and outside bars for many years.
