yes you can force it with htaccess but if your host uses cpanel it's much less dangerous for a nontechnical person to just change it through there. should be under php options or apache handlers in cpanel.

yea they have cpanel, i didn't realize you can specify an actual version number there though --- would it be appended to the extension name somehow or something?

to your point --- i'm surprised that upgrade did anything, but it's the only update that the host has been rolling out that would make sense
but that is why i was hoping someone who had this issue would holla --- because even if i can get some time stamps of when those files started being generated, that would help me narrow down the source
