Black people hate Season 2. I thought Season 5 was the worst because the newspaper scenes seemed unnecessarily thrown in just to spite David Simon's former bosses. It's too neat how the newspaper almost never was mentioned on the show, then it became the biggest story line for the last season. Still, you have to watch it to reach the conclusion.
And you absolutely need to watch Season 2 to see why the major shifts in Season 3 happen. I won't spoil it. But it suffices to say that the biggest plots of Season 3 only make sense in the context of Season 2.
That's how The Wire works. Nothing stands alone. Every plot began before the viewer gets dropped into it, and every plot continued after the show ended. It's about a cycle.
