I felt the same way. As a teenager, I was all about the rhymes. I used to think Rakim and Nas were the greatest rappers ever because they rapped better than anyone. But rap is music, first and foremost, and the listenability of it is crucial. So maybe Nas is a better rapper than Jay Z, but he hasn't made better rap music.
With that said, I think what Masta Killa was getting at was that the Wu-Tang Clan had great beats to amuse the masses, but the smart listeners were grasping so much more within the rhymes.
