I owned and ran a moderately successful text site in 2000 that didn't even have a discussion or emcee hookup forum. it was dwarfed by the sites you named but it had around a 100 loyal members that posted about thirty OM verses a day. we used to all talk through AIM or chat rooms.

Had you said the later, I would have agreed. But the former was never true at any of the major text sites.
But also, yes, there were trolls forever throughout the entire Internet. There were biters. There were hate votes. There were ignorant motherfuckers. There were people putting on acts. Some sites (Rap Music, Rap Battles) had more than others (RhymeNReason, Mr. Blunt). But trolls are forever.
