This reminds me of Peter Pan. In the original books, Pan suffered from severe cognitive dissonance. It showed itself in such forms as him constantly referring to the twins as one person, because he didn't understand the concept of twins.

He also eventually turned Wendy into an over glorified mother figure. Many of the pirates under Hook's command were former Lost Boys that chose to grow up instead of suffering from Pan's tyrannical and sociopathic rule. He really was a psycho.
