I can see how planets are looked upon as islands in outter space. It makes sense when I think about it. Just like you need oceans etc. to make islands, you need space to make planets the islands of the universe so we can agree that Mars (the planet) is the island of the universe. But, my point that Mars isn't on earth would only be wrong once you buy that island on earth. Since the earth and history is constantly changing I wont deny that Mars is an island/country when you make it so, but right now it isn't.. So...
