Well, part of it is GG is put out by a very small Japanese company. The games are published in North America by varying companies, and apparently none of those companies know shit about how to market a game lol.

Not to mention it isn't a real marketable game - SF and MK, for one, market themselves, the names alone sell half the copies sold probably. Everybody knows SF and even people who have no idea how to really "fighting game" pop it in and netplay once in a while. While GG looks like "anime" (eww gross) and has a lot of 'weird' characters and shit. Joe Fratboy does not want to be caught playing as lolita nun who is actually a boy in drag (Bridgette) by his bros.. but if they walk into his dorm while he plays SF, it's no big deal.

As for the game itself - at first it has a feel for being difficult, and it can be overwhelming. but, it really isn't THAT hard. there is a lot to learn but you don't need to learn it all right away.

the important stuff

- your character's goal/gameplan
- how to handle neutral with your character
- your character's defensive options
- your characters offense, how it is structured, how to maintain it, when to "let go"
- how to use BURST
- how to perform your character's main FRCs
- a basic midscreen combo, a basic corner combo

so lemme start by asking: what character are you playing?
