If you get a match on your 401k, just contribute enough to get the full company match, because it's free money.
Any contributions above that should go into a Roth IRA.
Unless you're contributing 10K or above for the year, the up front tax break you get in the traditional 401k won't be close to the benefit you get in the Roth where all growth and distributions are tax free.
