I rarely speak with any sort of finality or pretend to have a consummate opinion. I don't think my opinion is the only one that matters. It's actually the opposite. Playing devil's advocate, or giving 'obscure opinions on widely accepted topics' gives others a reason to question their ideas. Questioning is healthy, in my opinion. I'm only cynical in the fact that I think most people are ignorant. I do have a negative outlook, because my scope is large and what I perceive is mostly discouraging. The people you're talking about try to be different so they stand out. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, too. It's probably not always a positive trait.
