I am a narcissist with machiavellian traits.
Sadist/phsycho seems exagerated tho lol |
its a correlational study based on the online self-reports of admitted trolls. seems a bit shifty data-wise.

Dullboy is far so beyond discussing things. This topic clearly only warrants an ever-condescending "Lol"
Cool man awesome |
all I can think of when I see survey-based studies, is when we were given surveys in 12th grade about our substance habits. As it turned out, the majority of our senior class was heavily dependent on hardcore drugs daily.
it is an interesting read, and I'm not even saying the conclusion is incorrect, but I'd like to see a more researched effort: experiments targeted towards people who have existing troll reputations as opposed to identifying themselves as trolls, contrived situations on forums etc. More interesting to me, albeit less feasible, is if there are any neurological patterns shared by trolls such as physiological differences upon engaged trolling behavior (everyone gets a kick out of fucking with people a little bit, but do the ways/magnitudes of enjoyment differ amongst trolls insofar as brain activity?). |

Sorry, @dead man.
I don't know. The way mental states are defined just doesn't sit well with me, and this study, like most studies, is far from conclusive. It's a topic starter for a discussion on what? I trolled when I was 16 because I enjoyed getting a rise out of people. The internet was a playground back then, where you could slip into different roles and people took you at face value. People who troll aren't sadists, necessarily, because they don't consider people on the internet. That could be somewhat of a sociopathic trait, but I think it's more emotional ignorance than a lack of any empathy. Empathy has always been something I could turn on or off. Choose to feel or not. I assume everyone has that ability. I think now, a lot of trolls see what they're doing as mostly harmless. I guess the real discussion is how the internet creates a disconnect in responsibility. |
^^^nailed it.
|
I cant choose to feel empathy. I just sometimes don't feel it.
|
OH WAIT IM SUPPOSED OT BE TYPING IN ALL CAPS IM JUDGE BB
|
Empathy is just understanding someone else's emotional perspective. I don't it means you have to necessarily share their pain, as much as understand it. A sociopath by it's definition is someone with antisocial tendencies. Maybe some people are chemically unable to feel empathy, but I tend to think of most things as learned behavior, even if it's not direct, but more adaptive. That's all from my own experience, though, and that's obviously highly subjective. To say people who troll are sadists, though, is just incredibly narrow minded, even if it was a survey.
When I said I can choose to feel empathy, I mean that I can choose to lend myself to their plight. I can generally understand where a person is coming from. |
