so you may or may not know that I have started writing statistical matchup analyses for sherdog. which is cool, because I like that sort of thing.

however, my editor has told me that they're open to expanding my role to opinion pieces and other articles of that nature. I have ideas of my own, but I'm curious, to fans from avid to casual, what are things you are interested in hearing about? I'm trying to keep my ear to the people and all that. lmk what you think.

not to divert but can you tell me how you went about acquiring that position? i don't really write prose for fun, but i've read mma journalism for a good 8 years and all i really read now are Jack Slack articles, because it cuts to the core of the fight game/is specialized. almost everyone else i read, or have read, seems uninformed or are poor writers who i think i could do a better job than. i know, i sound conceited, but it's how i feel.

i thought your article on barao/dillashaw, though it came to naught, was sound. personally, i don't really care for the statistical side of things (too deeply) because i believe the criteria is skewered. some cretin was telling me phil davis 'outstruck' lyoto machida when they fought because he landed maybe a dozen nothing hammerfists during late round takedowns. i think anyone who watched that fight would disagree. maybe i have bias? there's a certain ignorance in hyper-analyzing the absolute mechanics of combat, especially when the system is illiterate.

Ben Fowlkes writing about the saturation of the current market, most prevalent this year, and the relationship of quality vs. quality was interesting. he seems a little more critical, and unafraid, of the despot that is Dana White than your average journalist. he's still a dick, though.

i don't know. i'm a bit of an old school guy when it comes mma, i still love the great fights, regardless of names/pulling power, but feel i have to wade through far too much (sub-)mediocrity to find them now. i suppose i've become disillusioned in recent years because some of my favourite guys have been in, or entered, their decline. but i also don't like the direction the company that virtually owns mma is taking it, though they've done inimitable good for the sport that i cannot deny. i'm a dick too, i guess.

anyway yea it's dope that you're writing for sherdog man.

tbh one of my ideas for an op-ed piece was to analyze the cause and effect of the over-saturation of events and the pull towards casual fandom. I think Dana White is a George Lucas-esque figure in the sport; he has masterminded its rise, and his success is undeniable, but his eccentricities have also been polarizing to say the least.
