Kanye West album named GQ's Best Album of the 21st Century

Is "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" the best album of the 21st century thus far?

GQ magazine has named Kanye West's critically-heralded My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy as their best album of the 21st century.

"It could've been any one of the seven albums West released this century, as fascinating a catalog of celebrity, triumph, love, loss, terrible puns, pretty decent puns, that was ever fucking put together by a single artist," GQ says. "MBDTF was just the record where he talked about all those things at once—a portrait of a man seizing the spotlight, drowning in it, and then somehow finding a way to turn that harrowing experience into art. Anybody who wants to be famous or make music for a living—or do both at the same time—should be forced to listen to MBDTF first. The rest of us are free to enjoy it for the bloody, hard-won, titanic achievement that it is."

Also appearing on the list are Outkast's Stankonia (2000) in third place, Ghostface's Supreme Clientele (2000) in tenth, Jay-Z's The Blueprint (2001) in twelfth, and J Dilla's Donuts (2006) just barely making the cut at number nineteen.

It is his best album in my opinion. What do you guys think?

it's easily his best
best album of the 2000s though...?

maybe

Beast of an album.

I'd like to see the list - I think his first two albums are better than MBDTF tbh. Blueprint is def better than it, too.

Ghost1 07-31-2014 10:13 AM

Lol. No. Why is a fashion magazine critiquing music in the first place.

An honestly his 1-3 first albums were all better imho

But yea.....of 21st century completely is absurd.

oats 07-31-2014 10:21 AM

yeah just looked through the list, it's shit on multiple accounts. Nothing to see here, folks.

Destroyer 07-31-2014 10:22 AM

what album would you give that title to tho?
like I've been seriously thinking about it

not fucking blueprint

ribbit 07-31-2014 10:27 AM

Its hard to have respect for producers these days they dont get the same scrutiny from the public as they did when i was coming up i meam id love to b like yeah these the dopest cats out rite but u cant cuz its hard to find out the inside info on the top artists i mean i wouldnt even know where to begin

Orc 07-31-2014 10:28 AM

It's better than Blueprint. The only other 'Ye album that comes close to it is College Dropout imo.

oats 07-31-2014 10:35 AM

best album of the 21st overall is def tricky, and my musical biases are hard to suppress. College Dropout is unquestionably better than the rest of Kanye's albums imo, and would be shortlisted. Daft Punk's Discovery would be up there as well, as would The Moon and Antarctica. Kid A by Radiohead deserves a nod, even though I'm not a big Radiohead. Honestly, I think Talib Kweli's Quality is a better album than MBDTF but maybe that's just me. If I had to pick though, I'd say either Discovery or Moon and Antarctica or College Dropout, all for different reasons. @Certain to thread for a more thought out opinion than all of us tbh

Loved it.

dull boy 07-31-2014 10:43 AM

lol

It's GQ. Of course they said this.

ribbit 07-31-2014 10:44 AM

I tìnk a lot nf the time sometimes the illest catr dont even get the credit they deserve and the person in the spotlight doesnt even deserve to be there

Certain 07-31-2014 10:52 AM

I'd say The Blueprint or Funeral. Kid A, Discovery, Is This It, Late Registration, Kala, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Channel Orange and Random Access Memories all would be fine picks as well.

There have been a lot of great albums, but you have to consider impact and innovation when discussing these lists.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (like Yeezus) wasn't geared toward rap fans, especially not the types that post on text rap message boards, as much as his early work, though. It was wildly inventive and put lyricism on the back burner.

Destroyer 07-31-2014 11:01 AM

i'd put good news above Antarctica

kannon 07-31-2014 11:09 AM

man, that album wasn't even the best album released that month.

YDK 07-31-2014 11:23 AM

Dropout is kanyes best by far...so gq couldn't even get best album by one dude right...fuckin idiots

to promote both the album and to get GQ magazine in the hands of more blacks, good business for both

jilti 07-31-2014 11:48 AM

I think that honor should go to Calvin Harris' 8 months album. I believe it broke the record for most top 10 singles on 1 album, previously held by michael jackson

dull boy 07-31-2014 12:09 PM

Also, naming it best of the 21st century only 14 1/2 years in is in very poor taste.
