It can be stopped for the simple reason its like 100million dollar machine .. which they do not want to ruin .. so for them to push it through boulders or old ships(boats) or w/e is down there would be hazardous to the profits ..

my main beef is all we have to go on (to my knowledge) is his word.

he was digging underground bunkers for the military. they hit a pocket under the earth which released a bunch of nasty sulfur smelling odors. he goes down with a solider or soldiers. when he reaches the bottom his sees aliens. there is a firefight between the soldiers and the aliens. the alien is a wizard btw, and does some hand motions, and fries off his toes and fingers. phil schneider is pushed back onto the lift by a soldier and makes it out alive to tell the tale

i might have got something wrong, but thats the jist of it.

i personally think he fucked up. they went down there with live explosives that misfired/didnt go off. they went off, and that is why he has the physical deformities
