Can you battle without lying?
 

One of my biggest problems with battling these days is the disappearance of the direct diss. Every time anyone tries it, they get called "statementish." So instead we get tons of lies.

I don't mean false personals. I'm talking about things like: calling a straight man "faggot"; talking about a single guy's girlfriend; calling someone's mom or girlfriend ugly when you've never seen her; saying someone you've consistently praised in the past is not actually good; etc. Basically, how many of you think you could consistently write battle verses where every single line was a direct, true-to-life personal?

That's the most effective thing. Battling shouldn't be about being wittier than someone else. It should be about demoralizing your opponent. It should be about making them reconsider everything they're doing in life. Battling should be mean. The Discussion forum has more mean disses than the battles do here.

I, for one, welcome our new Certain overlords and the compulsory act of supplying personal information and birth certificates for participation in all on-site text battles.

Personals only work if they're available. It's not as if we're all friends on FB or follow each other on Twitter. I value my anonymity. I'm guessing you haven't battled much, but what else could we possibly talk about?

To me, the opponent is;

- Inherently homosexual
- A virgin, and thus single
- Obese
- A basement dweller
- A complete failure at lolife

What can I say, it's stereotyping at it's finest. Plus wordplay isn't going anywhere.

I mean I guess if I were battling my friends that I grew up with / know a lot about..

But nobody, or at least very few, people online know that much about each other so how the fuck would this work out?

This is the point I came to after battling for a couple of years. It just gets old. This is why emcees in battle circuits feed each other personals before battles.

The only time I've been interested in writing a battle verse recently was against ill nika, because I felt I had 16 lines worth of personality aimmed material to use. In the end, I just didn't care enough to write it.

League battling is a hobby. I think this site, and others, focus too much on battling, but it's what draws a crowd.

Most people on here can't even post without lying, why would you expect them to be truthful in a battle?

I understand what you're saying tho, it does get old.

Most battlers have posted a photo before. And most post with some degree of regularity in discussion. If they're lying, there's nothing you can do. But why not base it off what you know, or at least don't base it off something you know is wrong? Like, don't say someone who has a child is a virgin. That's stupid.

word. that's always been my pet peeve battling on netcees. people prefer creative lies than brutal truth in battles. i get it though. people mainly want to Laugh, even if the diss ain't true. factual and straight-shooters aren't celebrated around here.

I agree to some extent. I try to match generic lines that I think of to the person I'm battling - sometimes I'll hold on to them to use against someone else in the future if they really don't fit the current opponent and I can think of other stuff to replace them. When I do a verse that's all or majority personals those tend to be my favorite verses. As others have said though, sometimes people just don't disclose enough about themselves to make a verse full of personals interesting and not repetitive.

I prefer breaking someone down and exposing all their faults in a hurtful/funny way. Most battling here is done for sport. Not much heart in it. Which is why battling is a young man's game. The older you get the harder it is to care about.

Lol yeah kiss fm in Poughkeepsie Ny. Honestly I was lucky, and it wasn't even my doing. The song I made for my friends who passed on a car accident (Tim and Danielle) were very popular in my highschool. And the song I made ended up surfacing thru the community like wild fire and the next thing I know I have all these comments on my soundclick page about the song. I guess it touched alot of the ppl I went to school with and one day I got a call from one of my boys telling me to turn the radio on. The radio guy said that he got so many calls to play a song he never even heard of that they literally tracked it down and played it on the air lol. They only played it once but still a defining moment. Lol
