I spilled water on my laptop.

It was only about 2 ounces, and at first nothing happened. I used a towel and put the computer upside down, and then it seemed fine. But just now it started to wig out. I turned it off and put it, bent open, upside down on my bed, so that it's forming an equilateral triangle. Anyone have any recommendations?

DON'T DO THIS. Just let that shit dry off. Using a blowdryer doesn't fix shit and might even complicate things further. Let it dry off and try to start it up again when you're 100% certain it's dried and hope that it still works and that none of the components are fucked up.

Good for you.

I have a space heater that I can set to a very low temperature. Would that be safe, @Objective?

Also, I know rice works on phones, but isn't a computer a bit complicated? I don't want rice grains stuck in my hard drive.

Clockwise 11-11-2013 02:31 AM

take the battery out and just let it air dry, make sure you don't power it back up until your sure it's completely dry

Just do what Clockwise just said. Let it air out, if you turn it on prematurely you might fry the shit out of it if you haven't already.

The space heater thing etc. is something I'm not sure of, it's probably fine, but I wouldn't do it because I'm weird like that.

@Objective, @Clockwise or anyone else, my hard drive does not appear damaged, but half my keyboard is fucked. I was able to log in to my account and upload all my documents to Google Drive because of the on-screen keyboard, but I can't type. Any ideas?

namix 11-12-2013 05:52 AM

i assume im late to the party here

but yea, turning it upside down is good --- I would actually turn it around almost completely, with just the slightest angle so the keys on the keyboards don't 'cup' any moisture.

but other than that, ya, battery out, turn it off, and hope it boots next time

also, in my experience the keys are the first do go but are the most likely to come back

if your HD goes, it's just gone lol. its a good sign that half the keyboard works, im surprised --- unless it was like juice that jammed the keys, but if it was water, that means that "it fried" like half of your keyboard essentially?

but im just talking from my embarassingly long history of spilling beer on laptops - i dont know much more than the average joe re: hardware.
