why are there colleges called "university of *insert state*" and some are called "*insert state* university"?

ex: Utah State University vs. The University of Utah

Probably just whatever sounds more official.

i was just wondering if there was a reasoning to it.

Here we have California state universities and universities of California

so CSU's and UC's

UC's are harder to get into than CSU's, and more, uh... Acclaimed I guess?
Schools like Berkeley are UC's and schools like Fresno state are CSU's

I'm not sure if that's official but I've found that what Fig said to be true. In Ohio, University of Miami and University of Dayton (although that's private) are more exclusive/prestigious than say Ohio University. Seems legit.
