why sample for beats?
if you make beats, why do you sample other artists instead of creating original stuff?
for instance, T.I.'s U DONT KNOW ME & Big Tymers sample the same horn riff. but like, can't niggas play horns or what? i'm wondering if people sample because they outright can't play instruments or for some cultural reason anyways niggas |
Id say cause its easier to make a beat when you have a general baseline to go off of.

Initially it was because inner city black kids couldnt afford instruments or lessons to play instruments. There parents would at the least have a turntable and some records so shit would get looped up and basically it gradually went from there.
Nowadays you have similair problems in the sense that people aint making crazy money off music. Beatmakers get paid once and if theyre lucky theyll get points on an albums sales. The problem is albums dont sell. So you dont have a quincy jones of hip hop. You cant afford to hire musicians and shit. Some learn. Like rza and he'll get musicoans to play shit. But for the most part its either someone playing a keyboard with fake horn sounds (which are samples btw) or you're gonna sample some shit and clear it, or not because you did wnough to disguise it and hope bob james doesnt come and take your house. But word basically its apart of the culture. Its like asking why does rock and roll use guitars. Its what makes it rock and roll. |

For real I respect when guys work as a band to make music. Hip hop with live musicians can be dope but logistics can get in the way. I play guitar/bass with a few different groups and I love the dynamic of a whole group. My reggae band actually made instrumental tracks from our last EP so if the singer goes somewhere that the rest of us can't (like Jamaica) he can use them himself. It's not ideal but a lot easier to coordinate |
the argument that it is easier to sample than it is to use vst and synths and whatnot is completely bullshit. I do both. I make enough money off of making music to pay for my equipment that I own and that's all I really need. Sampling is an art whether idiots want to admit it or not. Taking something old and giving it a different context is dope as fuck to me.
as someone that chop samples when i hear someone do this with them....that shit deserves a standing ovation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGe1z8G-rRk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTgLfIeKLA0 |
word.
imma keep it funky and do both. samples for mixtapes so i don't have to pay niggas to cease & desist. compose my own shit like that gangsta of love quincy jone$ |
