Um. Yeah, but what ramifications are there for revoking said external pain. Because it's not like taking a cigar that's burning you off your skin. It's a perception shift. That's not as simple as this makes it seem.

Diode 10-14-2014 09:31 AM

oh yes, please inform any cancer patient undergoing chemo that they just need to shift their perception and the pain will leave.

Rawn MD 10-14-2014 09:52 AM

pain is more than perception

its a biological response to stimuli

u cant change a biological response w/o medication

El Muffin 10-14-2014 09:54 AM

You would know all about that woukdnt u

Rawn MD 10-14-2014 10:00 AM

Wise Wiggles 10-14-2014 10:14 AM

Pain is an illusion.

dull boy 10-14-2014 10:16 AM

You can manipulate the way your brain receives pain and alter perception, but I was more referring to emotional pain, as I'm sure OP's quote was.

Actually I totally believe in this. We as people do not see anything as it actually is, whether it is our feelings or something physical like our senses it is always filtered by our perception and mood. This is why Buddhist monks are capable of such feats like hanging giant weights on their wiener without feeling pain. It's control over the self and is possible with enough will and practice.

El Muffin 10-14-2014 05:57 PM

In a sense, everything is. Still doesn't make the experience any less real to the person that experiences it.
