Texting is Dead

texting is dead as far as i'm concerned. i was around for its hayday, but that was friggin nearly 20 years ago now. fuckin crazy aye?

the progression we made from say, 1999 -> 2005 was leaps and bounds. going from the Tyson era to what I consider the end, the Namix era. Think about how vastly different those styles were. PJK introduced multisyllable rhymes, and we fuckin had a guide that showed you how to make em/be a textcee. I remember when we used to ADD to that book with new inventive styles and shit.

Topicals, too. I think Richard Corey laid down the foundation. Grimm.... folks like Raw. Duke & Bricks Build, Playedwords & mic boof, Inverse & me took it to some beatnik shit, around the time Diode was doing his own thing with topicals. Point is everyone had their own unique style. Now everyone is a clone.

Shiiit's stagnant. Reading any battle or topical here...there's nothing inventive at all. Everyones just doing the shit we already did. It'd be like if everyone still rapped in the 90s wu-tang style.

I've felt this way since I came here way back when, i've just always been too wasted to put it in a coherent post.

In conclusion, I think the only hope would be if we had a thriving audio scene like we did on b-boys. I think textceeing is just a dead medium, it's over, nothing more to be done with it. That'll never be true for music.

where are all the audio heads now? people used to kill it! yall remember Kuan? oof. & thr3 was on some next level shit. BlackJesus did his thing too. where are these folks these days?

Texting is dead.

New generation cats don’t even text one another. They all FaceTime each other lol. It’s crazy. Phone down and they just talking. Camera at all sorts of weird angles. Staring at nothing but wall or ceiling or at someone’s neck, legs or up their nose. Why not just call the other person? Idk man, weird society.

Pjk is not the godfather of multi syllabic rhymes. That's Rakim. In the 80s.

I don't agree with the hayday being 20 years ago... WOW @ Tyson... I haven't thought of that name in a long time.

I do agree though, that at a certain point there were a lot of people like me. I was dope and better than most but everyone stuck to the same punchline type text. I champed almost every league on the internet. During its prime I can't say exact years but it was awesome that people like Kempo and RC took hours and hours of time to write mags to hype things up. Allah too.. he did a lot for that.

And so that was the best as far as I'm concerned and I get there was a lull and everyone did the super punchline stuff, and obviously theres a better or worse. But it got boring. But with doing to text theres limitations, only so much you can do with it.

The topical stuff I have to admit I never read, I wrote a couple that were real personal I think, but I didn't read anyone elses.

And Kuan was the shit I almost made a song with him. He had a brother too which was pretty good.

but yeah you're correct that theres only so far you can go with being versatile and new with text vs. actually making music, but if you still like doing it then do it I guess.. I haven't read a text verse from anyone else since I went to jail when I was on project rhyme... I'm sure its all still witty, just witty the same way with new references instead of old pop culture references

Think about the amount of time we poured into text battles, leagues, tournament and shit.... mothafuckaz spent years mastering a craft that leads absolutely nowhere....wtf was we doing or hoping to accomplish?

This shit was our version of dungeon and dragons

Kill Spree 01-10-2020 06:53 PM

And now you sit here just discussing stupid pointless shit

Ouch 01-10-2020 06:53 PM

yeah snitching is gangsta... I agree with you

Only people I felt or maybe still feel bad for are people that it was something more than that.

I was a top 'texter' for years and years and years.. I was doing it to try and stay away from the streets, and I still was in the streets etc. I was only one of the few people I knew that even had the internet.

I was able to go home get on dial up AOL and post good punchlines like a comedian would and people would feel it or not. It was a distraction from real life and I was pretty good at it. Throughout basketball practices and real life bullshit I didn't post as much but it was like you said a hobby. I can rap, ok... I posted some shit I can't find it but I posted it on soundclick and my biggest song was bronx finest. I can't find it now but i've looked it was like 12 years ago.. or something like that. Was just me yelling bronx finest rapping horribly and yelling out neighborhoods. I never had a delusion of being a rapper, never tried.

nothing wrong with being a text rapper now, its just a fun distraction from things

Ouch 01-10-2020 06:55 PM

and if younger people can still do it, and get a kick out of it... more power to them its dope at least they're working their minds
