Sorry to hear. Probably more people than you think have gone through extremely tragic events. As a man all you can do is keep your emotions in check. If you control your emotions, you control your life. If your emotions control you, you will not be able to control your life. On the real though, the best route is probably talk to him at the closest possible time and hear his take on things...then you can choose to support him through his time in jail if you wish. He committed murder not you so there's nothing else to do.
