but i will concede black thought is top 10

kannon 05-16-2014 10:59 PM

any time someone asks me my top 5 dead or alive, black thought is the only one who has never not been in it.

TYSON 05-16-2014 11:02 PM

Who is black thought?

my favorite album of all time.

Certain 05-17-2014 12:45 AM

Illadelph Halflife is the best. Black Thought is top 20, maybe top 10. I'd put Common ahead of him.

Malachi 05-17-2014 12:56 AM

idk why but illadelph barely gets any play. its good lyrically but idk

i like things fall apart and do u want more better

YDK 05-17-2014 01:22 AM

tbh I've been listening to atmosphere more and more now that I don't have any subs in my car

Dam I dunno bout that..common over thought?

Care to explain your reasoning?

Certain 05-17-2014 04:32 PM

Common is a more interesting lyricist, and he has more mic presence. He also has had to carry his music more. Black Thought has better flow, but most people listen to The Roots as much if not more for the music than for the rap.

They're both great.

oats 05-17-2014 04:38 PM

Where do you guys put Royce compared to blackthought? I feel like Royce is a better mc than blackthought overall, but would never think to put him in my top 10. Maybe by the end of his career though.

Certain 05-17-2014 04:39 PM

Royce da 5'9" has had a career loaded with bad moves.

Destroyer 05-17-2014 07:21 PM

black thought is dope and most likely top 10
Royce? ain't even top 25

But that's my point. Is blackthought a superior mc to Royce? How so? What is it that gives blackthought that nod over Royce so easily?

Witty 05-17-2014 09:12 PM

Royce, ability wise...top 5 imo.

Witty 05-17-2014 09:13 PM

He isn't in my top 5 tho.

Strangely.

Witty 05-17-2014 09:15 PM

damn that's a good point tho...royce might be, in my opinion, the most gifted emcee hip hop has ever had...but if you talk about classics, if you talk about the artists who have had the biggest impact...nobody is mentioning royce.

wasted potential.

Witty 05-17-2014 09:37 PM

black thought is not top 10 tho imo, maybe top 20 but not top 10 nor 15.

He is dope tho.

kannon 05-17-2014 09:41 PM

I'm actually more interested in hearing why, after all of the amazing Roots albums that have come out, is uh oh only conceding this now? Especially since the new Roots album is not nearly as good as their older ones.

I mean, I've only listened to it once, and I admit that it's probably better than I'm currently giving it credit for, but I feel like ...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin might be their worst album. Black Thought literally only has 6 verses on the entire album.

uh-oh 05-18-2014 02:03 AM

i think the last roots album i checked was how i got over, which had dopeness THO

i just had some bars pop in me head and then peeped some of his radio frees again like word this dude is nastier then 98 percent of dudes who ever did it

Joe Metts 05-18-2014 02:50 AM

Black Thought is that dude. Top 5 is a reach tho.

Ghost1 05-18-2014 03:00 AM

I could argue the shit outta that list. All of them are dope, and have had dope moments or albums, but I think Black Thought has consistency. He's been dope from day one, and is still one of the illest lyricists of all time.

When I try to come up with a top 5, it's usually Black Thought, Pharoahe Monch, Andre 3000, and then the last two vary depending on how I feel that day. I would argue that Deacon the Villain is one of the illest. Phonte, when he raps. Elzhi. Kendrick still has to show some longevity, but I think he could get there. Aceyalone. Q-Tip. Gift of Gab. Masta Ace.

Ghost1 05-18-2014 01:49 PM

Thats funny....masta ace & pharoahe almost made my list

Like i said this was a quickly thrown together list but....yea...i dont think black can be in it

10....its possible

5...no. not for me.

Fart 05-19-2014 12:34 PM

did he ever do a lot of solo shit?

antihero 05-19-2014 11:56 PM

Top 30

Certain 05-20-2014 12:06 AM

My 10 favorite rappers:

1. Andre 3000
2. Notorious B.I.G.
3. Jay Z
4. Common
5. Bun B
6. Black Thought
7. Big Boi
8. Nas
9. Ghostface Killah
10. Redman

The 10 greatest rappers (factoring in influence, output and talent):

1. Jay Z
2. Eminem
3. Rakim
4. 2Pac
5. Ice Cube
6. Kool G Rap
7. Scarface
8. KRS-One
9. Nas
10. Notorious B.I.G.

Black Thought is probably top 20 greatest, though.

antihero 05-20-2014 12:07 AM

I agree

TYSON 05-20-2014 12:43 AM

Jayz #1?

antihero 05-20-2014 12:44 AM

Who would you put there? 2Pac might have been, but dying really cuts into career longevity and overall output. Jay Z's impact is incredibly expansive. He made himself the greatest as much through his business acumen as his rap skills. He positioned himself correctly and worked with the right people at the right times and highlighted his strengths at every opportunity.

Nas>Jay Z

And I would say Black Thought is top 20 but not top 10. Also to whoever said it I would put Thought over Common. Common can sometime get stagnant and boring. I think Thought has a more consistent catalog as well.
